Erdrich won the National Book Critics Circle Award for this, her first novel, which is comprised of fourteen interconnected stories told by seven different members of the Turtle Mountain Chippawa community. It’s very much like a zine in shape, size, format, and appearance. The only criticism I have is the cover art. Shea's "The Haunter in the Graveyard", to his spot-on delivery of H. Place" has a horrid little twist on the safe place that an abused woman goes to while attempting to escape her tormentor.
