Best Answer: What "conserved" means is that you can keep track of all the energy used in a transformation, doesn't matter if it's lost to entropy or mechanical losses, or used in a practical way in the new system as long as you can quantify all of it, that's what counts. [Comment: It seems that the term "closed system" is being used here as an identifiable transformation of energy from one thing to another, not the classical physics term, more akin to an engineering term where you want to figure out how to refrigerate a box from ambient to some lower temperature as an example, or change electrical power to motive energy in a motor, each of these being a "closed system".] In the classic Carnot engine no energy is lost at all and work is still done but it's a quasi-static motion in a perfect world of no friction and all so not a practical example, yet, it deserves your understanding since the principle is that important to thermodynamics, which is a way to understand the efficiency of any transformation, and more.
